MUNICH (Reuters) – Iran and Saudi Arabia must overcome strained relations and work for security in Syria and the Middle East, Iran’s outside pastor said on Friday, a day after Syrian peace talks conveyed the adversaries to the same table without precedent in months.

Talking at the Munich Security Conference hours after his Saudi partner tended to the occasion, Mohammed Javad Zarif said he needed to stop the quarreling and had a simple message: “We need to cooperate.”

“Iran and Saudi Arabia can’t reject one another from the region,” he said, reffering to Riyadh as “our Saudi brothers”. “We are prepared to work with Saudi Arabia … I believe Iran and Saudi Arabia can have shared interests in Syria.”

Zarif said he took inspiration from Iran’s historic nuclear deal with world powers last July, saying that agreement and the lifting of authorizations that have taken after demonstrated how profound situated issues can be determined through diplomacy.

“We have a common opportunity, basic difficulties, regular dangers,” Zarif said, adding that the time had come to “put aside the past and have another story, another worldview for the future.”

Iran and Saudi Arabia were at the same table amid six hours of talks in Munich among world and territorial forces on Thursday to examine Syria’s civil war, concurring a “suspension of dangers” to take impact in a week’s time.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, who talked in Munich before Zarif, made no references to Iran and underscored the distinctions over Assad’s future, telling EU priests and representatives that the Syrian pioneer would be uprooted. “That is our target and we will accomplish it,” he said.
